President Donald Trump promised to deliver a “Trump dividend” of $5,000 to every American adult if Republicans can hold on to both chambers of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections .
The president’s vow came during his keynote address closing out the first night of the Republican midterm convention .

“If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them, because of our economic, tremendous economic success — in history we’ve never had anything like what’s happening — but because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” Trump declared.
Trump said the only condition on the payment of the dividend would be that it must be spent within the United States.
“We don’t want you going to Canada to spend the money. We don’t want you going to China, to Germany,” he said. “You got to spend the money in the United States of America.”
Trump said the dividend was possible because of his administration’s tariffs on foreign goods.
“The reason the Democrats can’t do that is because they don’t do tariffs, they don’t take in money. All they know is poverty and how to ruin our country. But we’re making a fortune,” Trump said. “So if the Republicans win, you win with us, and you get $5,000. It will be called the Trump dividend. We’ll call it the Trump dividend. Congratulations. Now all we have to do is win.”
But the cost of such a handout would be steep. Given that the U.S. has more than 200 million adult citizens, the dividend could cost well over $1 trillion.
