Millions of Americans are enjoying a long holiday weekend due to Labor Day, but does the federal holiday have to throw shopping plans into disarray?
Despite the fact that federal offices and banks are largely closed for the holiday, a number of the biggest retailers and grocery chains are expected to remain open, allowing shoppers to take advantage of Labor Day sales and potentially pick up last-minute cookout essentials.
Most major chains, including Walmart, Target, Kroger and Trader Joe's, are planning to operate on Labor Day, but some locations may have modified hours.
Labor Day marks for many the unofficial " end of summer " and also one of the busiest retail weekends of the year. Retailers often offer major discounts on appliances, electronics and back-to-school items.
While many retailers remain open, Americans planning to mail packages or visit their bank should check ahead, as several services will be unavailable until Tuesday due to the federal holiday.
Unlike Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day, Labor Day is not a major retail shutdown. Most national chains remain open and many promote large sales events throughout the holiday weekend.
Hours can vary by location, and some pharmacies, grocery stores and specialty retailers may operate on reduced schedules.
Store hours should generally be verified before visiting.
Costco is one of the few major retailers that traditionally closes for Labor Day and will be closed nationwide this year for the holiday.
The warehouse club is also closed on several other major holidays throughout the year, including Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Walmart stores generally remain open on Labor Day, normally operating under normal business hours.
The retail giant is offering several Labor Day deals on thousands of items, according to its website.
As with other major holidays, individual locations may make minor adjustments, so customers should still confirm hours with local stores.
Target remains open on Labor Day and often offers holiday sales promotions throughout the weekend, according to the company website.
Most locations are expected to maintain their standard operating hours.
Kroger stores are open on Labor Day, according to its website, so shoppers will have access to last-minute groceries and holiday cookout supplies.
The grocery retailer says that "pharmacy and clinic hours may vary" for the federal holiday.
Many Kroger locations traditionally operate on major summer holidays, though hours may differ by region.
Trader Joe's stores are also expected to be open on Labor Day this year.
As a general policy, the grocery chain does not offer coupons, discounts or holiday sales, according to its website.
"We have low prices, every day. NO coupons. NO membership cards. NO discounts. NO glitzy promotions or couponing wars at our stores. We offer the best everyday values, every day," they say on their website.
The grocer remains open on Monday. Store-specific hours may vary.
The U.S. Postal Service suspends regular mail delivery on Labor Day, and post offices nationwide will be closed.
Major package carriers are also affected. UPS pickup and delivery services will not operate on the holiday, while FedEx has paused many domestic and international package services.
Some FedEx Office and UPS Store locations may operate with modified hours depending on location.
Several additional services will be unavailable on Labor Day.
Banks are generally closed, but ATMs and online banking services should remain available.
The New York Stock Exchange and other U.S. financial markets will be closed, alongside federal, state and many local government offices.
USPS facilities will be closed, and regular residential mail delivery will resume on Tuesday.
