It was not immediately clear how seriously injured the other victim was.
The episode unfolded just before 4:30 p.m. at Seventh Avenue and West 43rd Street, near a Police Department substation in the crowded heart of Times Square. Social media posts describe a woman in a pink shirt holding knives.
A video provided by a former law enforcement official shows the woman holding something in at least one of her hands and standing on the sidewalk, with a semicircle of about 10 officers roughly 10 feet in front of her.
After about 12 seconds, the woman begins waving her arms in large circles. An officer extends an arm toward her, and a shot is heard, then two more. The woman begins running toward the officers, and two more shots are heard.
Another video, provided by a nearby food vendor, shows the same woman lying on the ground and blood spreading across the sidewalk as officers appear to render aid. Paramedics transport the woman on a gurney.
