The New York Police Department (NYPD) first reported a shooting “ involving federal law enforcement agents ” occurred at approximately 4 p.m. in the Bronx’s Marble Hill neighborhood, clarifying that city police were not involved in the incident. Officials confirmed to The Hill’s broadcasting partner NewsNation at around 6 p.m. that ICE agents had been involved.
The officials told NewsNation that the victim was an immigrant who entered the country illegally and had a criminal record.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Thursday night that the man had a prior criminal conviction for grand larceny, and multiple prior arrests for assault, robbery, possession of drugs and weapons possession.
The man, 28, had previously been arrested on Dec. 7, 2023, but was released a few days later, according to DHS.
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said during a Thursday night press conference that at least one ICE agent discharged seven rounds, striking the victim in the neck below his left ear. NYPD reported the man was transported to a nearby hospital.
Mamdani, in a social media post, denounced ICE’s actions in the city, calling it “an incredibly serious situation.” The New York City mayor added that he had already called President Trump about the incident.
“I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city,” he wrote. “I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities.”
Mamdani said early reports indicated ICE agents fired multiple rounds at the victim’s car while he and his 5-year-old child were inside. The child was reportedly unharmed.
New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin echoed Mamdani’s stance on ICE’s alleged actions, saying she was “deeply troubled” by the reports.
“Federal authorities must provide us with a fully transparent account of what took place without delay,” Menin wrote on social media Thursday night. “I recognize the immense fear that ICE’s actions have caused immigrant New Yorkers, and I’m deeply worried about the additional anxiety and uncertainty this incident may bring to communities across our city as we await answers.”
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) said on social media that she had been briefed on the shooting and expects “a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident.”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) called the incident “deeply disturbing,” and that “DHS must immediately release all body camera footage and ensure a full, independent investigation.”
“For months, I’ve warned that ICE’s increasingly aggressive tactics put lives at risk,” Schumer continued on the social platform X.
The Bronx ICE-involved shooting comes less than a month after ICE agents similarly shot a Venezuelan national in Austin, Texas, while he was delivering food. The man, 28, has since been charged with assault.
Despite some Democrats’ calls for the agency’s abolition, White House border czar Tom Homan has emphasized in recent weeks that ICE is “ not going anywhere .”
The DHS said the incident is currently under investigation, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
