Five years after the Taliban returned to power, Afghan women face sweeping restrictions on education, work, movement and public life, with the UN describing Afghanistan as the world’s worst country for women’s rights. As international aid funding falls, the UN is urging donors not to abandon programmes supporting Afghan women, warning that many organisations could be forced to close.
