Trump told Max Miller winning after abuse allegations would be ‘tough’

President Donald Trump privately warned Rep. Max Miller (R-OH) that his reelection campaign faces an uphill battle during a phone call on Monday, according to the congressman.
Trump told Miller, a former Trump campaign aide and White House staffer, that he believed the race would be difficult.
“He said he had a poll with no detail, and I pushed back with our poll that has us winning by 9 with our message out there,” Miller told the Wall Street Journal . “He kept on reiterating, ‘It’s going to be tough, and it’s going to be a really hard one for you.’”
Miller also asked Trump to publicly reaffirm his support for the congressman’s campaign. Asked whether he sought the president’s backing, Miller said he remains in the race and that Trump “was supportive of me over the phone.”
Trump sidestepped commenting on the controversy when pressed by supporters in the Oval Office on Monday.
“I know Max,” Trump said. “He’s a good person. I mean, I always thought he was a very good person. I’m going to let the families figure that out.”
He added that the domestic abuse claims remain “accusations.”
Miller, who had already received Trump’s endorsement for his reelection campaign in Ohio’s 7th Congressional District, is facing domestic abuse allegations from his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, the daughter of Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH). The Ohio senator has spoken up, urging Miller to resign from the House this weekend and saying he needs “serious psychological help.”
Miller has denied the allegations and said he has no plans to resign from Congress or end his reelection campaign. Under Ohio election law, he has until Monday to withdraw from the race before Republicans lose the opportunity to nominate a replacement for the November ballot.
In a video statement released Sunday, Miller again denied abusing either his ex-wife or their 2-year-old daughter, arguing the allegations are not credible and pointing to his former spouse’s diagnosed mental health condition. The couple finalized their divorce in December 2025 after Miller filed for divorce in August 2024.
Miller has also filed a defamation lawsuit against Emily Moreno and her attorney over the abuse allegations.
