Nicolas Batum may be entering the later stages of his NBA career, but that doesn't mean contenders have stopped having a use for him.
The veteran forward remains one of the best free agents available, especially for teams looking for experience, versatility and a player who doesn't need a huge role to make an impact.
Batum spent last season with the LA Clippers, earning $5.6 million, and currently holds Early Bird rights. His situation is a little different now, though, after the Clippers declined his $5.9 million team option, giving the franchise more flexibility as it reshapes its roster.
The Clippers have several major decisions to make this offseason, and their recent moves suggest they're beginning to shift toward a younger roster.
The trades involving James Harden and Ivica Zubac point in that direction, with the team adding younger pieces. That could make Batum expendable in Los Angeles, even if he remains useful elsewhere.
Batum's basketball intelligence has long been one of his biggest strengths. He knows where to be, makes smart decisions and can knock down an open shot when a team needs one. Those qualities become extra valuable in the postseason.
Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report named Batum among the top remaining NBA free agents to watch, highlighting why the veteran could still draw interest despite the Clippers moving in a younger direction.
For Los Angeles, declining the option creates room to give Batum's roster spot to a younger player. For a contender, however, the decision could create a real chance.
Batum probably isn't going to command a massive contract at this point in his career. But if a playoff team needs a veteran who understands the game, can defend multiple positions and won't demand touches, he could be a solid addition.
