In questions with reporters, Trump lambasted the Senate, specifically Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), for not advancing the nomination of acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. Trump said he is a “pawn” in Cornyn’s fight to end the Justice Department’s anti-weaponization fund.
Trump went on to insist that people who were “victims” of government “weaponization” during the Biden and Obama administration deserved to be compensated. It echoed a Truth Social post Trump made Friday morning.
The meeting at the Maryland presidential retreat comes amid several thorny foreign policy issues: The Iran conflict shows no clear path to resolution and threatens to expand ; Ukraine and Russia remain locked in a war; and a Hamas disarmament deal announced Thursday is drawing Israeli skepticism.
Plus, American consumers feel squeezed by unrelenting high prices, the Senate is at odds with Trump over his priorities and the president’s approval ratings have reached their lowest point in his second term, according to more than one poll.
Trump will head to his Bedminster, N.J., golf club for the weekend following the meeting.
