Good was fatally shot on Jan. 7 during the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) immigration crackdown in Minnesota called Operation Metro Surge .
One of the lawsuits — which named former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, other Trump administration officials and the officers involved in the shooting — said the operation was “designed to be a violent and discriminatory campaign targeted at Minnesotans on the basis of race and national origin.”
“Renee was one of those casualties,” the lawyers for Good’s family continued.
The other lawsuit named the “United States of America” as the defendant, which allows Good’s next of kin to sue the federal government for personal injury.
This complaint cited the Hennepin County medical examiner who ruled Good’s death as a homicide following a private autopsy and the office finding “three clear gunshot wound paths” to her body.
“Each of Ross’s three shots was fired in violation” of DHS mandatory policy, which permits officers to use force only when “no reasonably effective, safe, and feasible alternative appears to exist,” the lawyers for Good’s partner, Becca Good, wrote, referencing one of the officers, Jonathan Ross.
Video from bystanders showed an officer approaching an SUV stopped across the middle of the road, demanding Good open the door before he grabbed the handle of the vehicle.
Good’s vehicle begins to pull forward and a different ICE officer standing in front of the vehicle pulls his weapon and immediately fires multiple shots into the vehicle at close range, jumping back as the vehicle moves toward him. The SUV then sped into two cars parked on a curb nearby before crashing to a stop.
The lawsuit alleged Ross, the officer who shot and killed Good, also shouted obscenities at the woman while she pulled forward, yelling “fβββing bββββ.”
Video appeared to show Good’s neighbor, a doctor, being told to step back after he offered medical care for her twice.
Her death, and another shooting involving the killing of 37-year-old Alex Pretti by an ICE officer in Minneapolis a week later, sparked waves of intense protests across the state.
ICE and DHS did not respond immediately to The Hill’s request for comment.
