Texas Makes Ugly History in Upset Loss to Oklahoma

This time, No. 1 Texas suffered its first loss of the season in a 27-24 loss to the Sooners, who improved to 3-2 with the win over its arch rival. The Longhorns held a 17-7 lead at halftime, but four punts, two interceptions by Arch Manning, including a pick-6, allowed Oklahoma to mount a comeback in the second half to save its season.
The Longhorns entered the season with a No. 5 ranking and rose to the No. 1 spot after earning a comeback win over then-No. 1 Ohio State on Sept. 12.
Texas will be No. 1 no more after losing to an Oklahoma program that dropped out of the rankings after beating New Mexico just 14-6 one week after losing 17-10 to Michigan.
With an unranked Sooners team pulling the upset over No. 1 Texas, the Longhorns made ugly history on Saturday. Per ESPN Insights, the Longhorns became just the second team since 2010 to be ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press poll and lose to an unranked team. Texas joined Alabama, who lost to unranked Vanderbilt 40-35 in 2024.
Texas avoided a near upset on Sept. 26 when the Longhorns held off a comeback by then-No. 14 Tennessee. Texas was an imperfect No. 1 team, but UT had the best win of any college football team on its resume with the win over the Buckeyes.
Following the loss to Oklahoma, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said he knows there are issues the team must fix to remain in the mix for the College Football Playoff.
βThereβs a level of anger and frustration because we know we have issues that need to be fixed, and weβre working on those issues and trying to get them fixed," Sarkisian said , via On3. "But they reared their ugly head today against a quality team.β
Texas will next host a Florida Gators program that lost to South Carolina on Saturday.
