Trump, in a post on Truth Social , said the U.S. will allow up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef to be imported without an “out-of-quota tariff,” or the higher rate often placed on imported goods when the trade volume surpasses a certain threshold.
He added that the administration is doing this “as we work to rebuild this herd and help our ranchers.”
The move will likely anger the cattle industry as more imported beef makes its way into the country.
Trump said Friday that the price of beef “soared at their fastest rate and the American beef herd fell to its smallest size in modern history” under the Biden administration.
“We have a commitment that this beef will be sold at 25 percent below current market prices,” the president continued. “This deal will reduce prices for Americans while giving space for our Great American Beef Herd to grow again.”
The average price of 100 percent ground beef per pound in the U.S. is roughly $6.89, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data shared by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis .
The president planned a similar move in May, according to Politico, but shelved the idea after pushback from his inner circle.
