The Colorado Buffaloes are a little over two weeks away from their season opener against the George Tech Yellow Jackets, and a conflict arose that could impact head coach Deion Sanders and whether or not he’s available for that game.
According to Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today, Sanders may have to testify in the bankruptcy case involving his son Shilo Sanders, which is scheduled for Aug. 31 through Sept. 4.
“The judge noted the conflict with Colorado’s season opener and said he wouldn’t be surprised if Deion Sanders tried to fight the subpoena to testify at the trial," Schrotenboer wrote .
Colorado opens the season on Sept. 3, and that week is when the Buffaloes will prep to travel to face Georgia Tech on the road. It’s possible the team may be without Deion for some — or all — of its Georgia Tech prep, and possibly the game.
Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio pointed out it's possible Deion might not have to miss any time if he's allowed to film his testimony and have it played via video.
"If either or both sides aren’t willing to work together...Deion may have to take a break from practices and meetings to show up to court in Denver," he wrote.
The University of Colorado did not respond to several requests for comment from multiple news outlets.
Having Deion on the sideline for the Georgia Tech game is vital.
The Buffaloes can’t afford to get off to a bad start. They finished 3-9 last season — their first without Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter — and Deion is under more pressure to deliver winning seasons and bowl wins after signing a five-year, $54 million contract extension last March.
In three seasons at Colorado, Deion has compiled a 16-21 record with a 9-18 record against Big 12 competition. He’s made one bowl game — the 2024 Alamo Bowl, which CU lost 36-14 to BYU.
Many have criticized Deion for being a below-average coach without his son Shedeur or Hunter on the team. He has a 36-15 record with them and a 7-12 record without them.
