Addressed to Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Dick Durbin (D-N.Y.), the letter asserts that, “Mr. Blanche has taken actions that we believe make him unfit to lead an ethical and independent department of justice that is essential to our nation’s democracy.”
President Trump picked Blanche to replace former Attorney General Pam Bondi following her firing in April . Since then, Blanche has filled the acting role but must be confirmed by the Senate. The first of two days of confirmation hearings began Wednesday.
“The Attorney General personifies for Americans our commitment to the rule of law and equal justice under the law,” the association wrote.
“Todd Blanche fails to meet this standard,” the letter later continued.
The statement comes amid other demands to reject Blanche’s appointment. The acting attorney general has faced backlash for his politicization of the DOJ and for his handling of files concerning convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
On July 7, over 1,200 former Department of Justice (DOJ) employees called on senators to dismiss Blanche’s appointment, drawing attention to his “degradation of DOJ’s apolitical career workforce.”
A video posted on Monday by the World Without Exploitation, an organization against human trafficking, features Epstein survivors expressing their disapproval of Blanche.
“Under Blanche’s leadership at the Department of Justice, Epstein survivors’ personal information — including their names, phone numbers, and home addresses — was exposed, while the names of many alleged abusers and other powerful individuals connected to Epstein remained redacted,” the group wrote alongside the Instagram post.
