Prince Harry and his wife are moving back to Great Britain over six years after they left the country following a public break with the royal family.
The relationship unraveled after Harry married Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, in 2018. At the time, Meghan was an American actress known in Hollywood for roles in Suits , among others. After the couple aired grievances against relatives and decided to opt out of royal duties, they were stripped of their royal titles several years ago and moved to the United States in 2020.
The saga came full circle Wednesday when it was revealed they are expected to relocate later this month to the United Kingdom. The prince’s father, King Charles, was informed of their decision on Sunday, according to BBC News and multiple other outlets. There will be no change to the status of Harry and Meghan, and they will remain as private individuals, with no plans to resume their roles as working royals, according to reports. Harry’s brother, Prince William, and Princess Catherine were also notified of the couple’s return.
“The king … welcomes the opportunity to see more of the Sussex family in a private and personal capacity,” the BBC said.
The development comes after the couple suggested during a controversial interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021 that some members of the royal family were racist. Those remarks were just some of the incidents that stoked an uproar at Buckingham Palace.
In May 2025, Harry claimed it was disputes over his security that had “always been the sticking point” and said, “I can’t see a world in which I would bring my wife and children back to the U.K.” During the interview with the BBC, he conceded there have been “so many disagreements between myself and some of my family” but said he “would love a reconciliation.”
The relationship appeared to thaw after the king revealed in 2024 that he was diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer . In the fall of 2025, Charles and Harry were reunited for the first time in 19 months.
Tensions appeared to further ease over the summer, when the Sussex family traveled to the U.K. to promote the 2027 Invictus Games and were hosted by the king at his private residence in Gloucestershire.
As of Wednesday, the couple and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, are expected to relocate from their California home to a residence outside London, according to the Telegraph .
