Athletics Star Catcher Lands on IL With Torn Meniscus

The Athletics are at risk of losing All-Star catcher Shea Langeliers for the remainder of the 2026 season. Langeliers reportedly tore his meniscus in his right knee and will have to decide whether or not to undergo surgery, according to ESPN .
ESPN reported that Langeliers tore his meniscus while running the bases. He is expected to undergo surgery, and the operation would sideline the 2026 All-Star for the rest of the season.
The Athletics placed Langeliers on the 10-day injured list on Sunday. In a corresponding move, the organization recalled catcher Brian Serven from Triple-A Las Vegas.
Before suffering the injury, multiple teams were interested in acquiring Langeliers ahead of MLB 's Aug. 3 trade deadline.
Langeliers was the starting catcher for the American League All-Star team this season. It was the 28-year-old's first All-Star selection of his career and marked the first time an Athletics catcher has started in an All-Star game since Terry Steinbach in 1989.
Drafted by the Atlanta Braves with the No. 9 overall pick in 2019, Langeliers is also one of the best hitters in the AL. His 23 home runs this season rank sixth in the AL, and Cal Raleigh of the Seattle Mariners is the only catcher who has hit more home runs (104) than Langeliers (83) in the past three seasons.
The Athletics have posted a disappointing 44-60 record and hold MLB's worst minus-122 run differential this season. The organization was reportedly not open to trading Langeliers but may have been able to be convinced if the right offer became available.
However, Langeliers' torn meniscus has now likely taken him out of trade deadline conversations this season.
