At least two people are dead and five have been injured in a shooting at a food festival near the Space Needle in Seattle , Washington, on Sunday night, according to police.
Police and emergency crews reported to the scene shortly after 6 p.m. local time, according to the Associated Press . Event attendees rushed to exit the venue after several loud pops were heard.
“Police are investigating a shooting,” the Seattle Police Department said in an initial statement . “Multiple shooting victims. Shots fired at the Seattle Center. More information to come. Please avoid the area.”

Grace Nunez, a spokesperson for the Seattle Fire Department, later confirmed two people died at the scene. She said four patients were transported to Harborview Medical Center, including one person in serious condition and three in stable condition. A fifth person declined to go to the hospital.
Gov. Bob Ferguson (D-WA) said in a statement he is “receiving briefings regarding the ongoing response at the Seattle Center.”
“The Washington State Patrol SWAT team is on the way to assist, at the request of the Seattle Police Department,” Ferguson said. “Please continue to avoid the area. If you are in the area, please follow directions from law enforcement. My prayers are with the families of the victims, and the responders as they work to keep people safe.”

Bite of Seattle, an annual event hosted at the Seattle Center, features live music and food vendors and was started in 1982. The Seattle Monorail closed for the rest of Sunday following the shooting.
Police have not confirmed whether a suspect is in custody or if there was more than one shooter.
