It’s said to be one of the worst losses in the Red River Rivalry, and it happened during the tenure of Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning.
Oklahoma kicked a 47-yard field goal to put the Sooners over Texas in the final play of Saturday’s heated game, securing a 27-24 win over the No. 1 team, handing them their first loss of the season. Manning threw for three touchdowns but had two costly interceptions – one of which set up the game-winning field goal -- something that made former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III take notice.
“And that’s why Arch Manning needs to come back for another year of college football ,” the Heisman Trophy winner and former Washington Commanders’ quarterback said in a post on X following the Longhorns loss. “Just needs more experience.”
More often than not, Manning has been called a liability, especially after this particular loss.
“With Oklahoma’s offense being what it is, No. 1 Texas could only lose this Red River Rivalry if it handed the Sooners points on a platter,” USA Today reported . “Manning shoved the platter into Oklahoma’s hands. The quarterback with college football’s most famous surname repeatedly panicked and threw two brutal interceptions in the fourth quarter.”
Manning threw for 260 yards, and Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian pointed out the positives of his QB following the loss.
“Arch competed his tail off and he made some tremendous plays,” Sarkisian said .
Griffin is still a major name in the NCAA world as an analyst with Fox Sports. He won the Heisman in 2011 after playing quarterback for the Baylor Bears and was selected second overall by the Washington Commanders in the 2012 NFL draft.
