The Houston Rockets didn't have a first-round pick, but they still found a player who could help with one of the biggest questions hanging over the roster. Who else can create offense? It's a pretty simple answer.
Bruce Thornton won't come into Houston with the same expectations as a lottery pick, but the No. 31 selection could end up being an important one. The Ohio State guard spent four seasons in college and brings something the Rockets needed more of last season. They needed another player who can put pressure on a defense.
That might not sound like a huge need when you have Kevin Durant, but it became obvious during the year. Houston relied heavily on Durant to make difficult shots and carry the offense when things got stagnant. That's not a sustainable formula, especially for a team hoping to make a deeper playoff run.
Thornton gives the Rockets another option. Finally.
He's a confident scorer who likes having the ball in his hands, and while he's not a traditional point guard, Houston doesn't necessarily need that. The team needs someone who can make a good play and keep the offense moving when the first option isn't there.
Thornton has a chance to compete for those minutes right away. The bigger question is how quickly he can adjust.
The NBA will challenge Thornton's size and decision-making, and he'll need to prove he can do more than score. Defending, making the simple pass and earning the trust of the coaching staff will determine how much he plays.
Houston also needs continued growth from Amen Thompson and Reed Sheppard, especially as playmakers.
But, long story short, Thornton doesn't have to be a star to make this pick a win. If he can become a reliable guard who gives the Rockets another ball handler and another player defenses have to respect, he could fill a role this team was missing.
