As the ESPN “College GameDay” panel was doing their weekly game picks, Herbstreit went against the grain for the Minnesota - Michigan game.
Former Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard, former Alabama head coach Nick Saban, Pat McAfee, and guest picker Caitlin Clark all chose Michigan to rebound from a 20-19 loss to Iowa last week with a win over Minnesota.
However, as Herbstreit correctly predicted, Minnesota pulled the upset and rolled to a 20-14 victory over the Wolverines at home.
“Drake Lindsey, the quarterback for Minnesota, playing at home — and I tell you, the one thing that doesn’t get talked about ever is Minnesota’s defense,” Herbstreit said. “Watch today, I think Anthony Smith, a potential first-rounder, has great size — if they get Underwood into third-down situations, this defense can apply pressure. I think Minnesota will win it. I like them in a low-scoring game.”
Lindsey had a decent game, completing 17 of 25 passes for 136 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. Smith made an impact on defense, logging two tackles, 0.5 sacks, and 0.5 tackles for loss.
The win pushes Minnesota to 4-1. The Golden Gophers are now riding a three-game win streak with victories over Akron, Washington, and Michigan. Minnesota has another winnable matchup next week against Purdue before embarking on a daunting task of facing three straight ranked teams — No. 14 Iowa, No. 6 Indiana, and No. 23 UCLA.
Conversely, Michigan has lost back-to-back games after starting 3-0 with wins over Western Michigan, Oklahoma, and UTEP.
The Wolverines have tough games the next two weeks against Penn State and No. 6 Indiana before getting two winnable games against Rutgers and Michigan State.
