Huizenga to face McCann in tight Michigan House contest

Bill Huizenga (Mich.) is projected to win a Tuesday Republican primary in Michigan’s 4th congressional district to face off against Democratic state Sen. Sean McCann in November, according to Decision Desk HQ.
Huizenga clinched the party nomination over Philip Tanis, the former mayor of Holland, Mich. and ex-city council member, while McCann defeated Diop Harris, a former aide for Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio).
Democrats are hoping to flip the seat, which Cook Political Report rates as leaning toward the GOP. The House Democrats’ campaign arm has included the race as one of its top targets this November.
The president encouraged Huizenga to run for reelection last July, describing the lawmaker as a “Tremendous Champion” and a “Highly Effective Representative.”
Local media reported that Trump urged Huizenga to steer clear of the Senate race as the GOP lined up behind Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.).
Huizenga now advances to the general election with nearly $2.3 million on hand as filed with the Federal Elections Commission on July 15. McCann’s last financial report says he has about $1.7 million on hand.
