Inter Miami and Argentina soccer legend Lionel Messi 's father, Jorge Messi, died at age 68. Jorge Messi reportedly died Friday night at a hospital in Rosario, Argentina after battling a long-term illness.
Lionel Messi spoke about the impact of his father's illness on his mental health during the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer. After scoring his first of three goals against Algeria, Messi was seen crying and later told reporters he was dealing with a difficult family situation.
"I have been through some difficult, complicated days," Messi said. "I am thankful for the support I have received from my teammates and the staff during this time."
A week after Lionel Messi scored three goals against Algeria, his family released a statement about the health issues Jorge Messi was dealing with. The statement said he was "progressing favourably".
"The Messi family informs that Jorge Messi is currently going through a health situation," Messi's family said. "At this time, he is under medical supervision, recovering and progressing favourably within the condition he is experiencing."
Jorge Messi worked in a steel factory in Rosario, Argentina before relocating to Barcelona , Spain when his son signed with Barcelona's academy in 2000. From there, he became Messi's manager throughout his entire career.
Lionel Messi went on to play for Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and now Inter Miami. He also became an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner and holds the Barcelona record for appearances and goals scored.
Messi helped Argentina win the 2022 FIFA World Cup and has led the nation to three of the last four World Cup finals. Jorge Messi was unable to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup but was in attendance when Lionel Messi won his first World Cup in 2022.
