Who's Standing Out in the Rams' Training Camp?

Ty Simpson hasn't been perfect during his first NFL training camp, but the rookie quarterback is doing enough to make people say good things. After a couple of padded practices, the reports around the Los Angeles Rams have been especially encouraging, with those two sessions reportedly ranking among Simpson's best work of camp so far.
That's exactly the kind of progress the Rams want to see from a young quarterback. Of course, Simpson is still learning the speed and physicality of the NFL, so mistakes are going to happen. What's more important right now is how quickly he responds to coaching and whether the corrections show up the next time he takes the field. So far, Simpson appears to be handling that part of the job well.
The Rams head coach praised Simpson for speeding up his release, an adjustment that can make a significant difference when defensive linemen are suddenly closing in much faster than they did in college. McVay also pointed out that Simpson is doing a better job marrying his lower body with the timing of his routes.
That's not necessarily the flashiest thing to watch during practice, but it's the kind of detail that matters.
A quarterback can have all the arm talent in the world, but if his feet aren't working with the timing of the play, everything starts to feel late. Simpson appears to be making progress in that area, and the fact that he's responding to coaching should only help him as the summer continues.
The Rams aren't expecting Simpson to walk into camp and look like a finished product. He's a rookie, and there are going to be some ugly throws and uncomfortable moments along the way. For now, the encouraging part is that the good days seem to be getting better.
Two strong padded practices aren't enough to make any grand declarations about Simpson's future, but they're certainly worth noting. If he continues absorbing McVay's coaching and cleaning up the finer points of his game, the rookie could give the Rams another solid piece to develop behind the scenes.
