Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Uzbekistan for a two-day state visit, after which he will go to Kyrgyzstan for the SCO Summit. Meanwhile, hundreds of Indians are still missing in Nepal.

08/30/2026 August 30, 2026 India and Uzbekistan elevate ties, set new trade target Dmytro Hubenko Editor India and Uzbekistan have agreed to set a bilateral trade target of $5 billion (€4.32 billion) and host a Business Summit to deepen the economic ties between the two Asian nations, amid Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Tashkent.
During a joint statement after a bilateral meeting, Modi thanked Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev for the warm welcome.
Modi announced that India was elevating its relations with Uzbekistan to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, while applauding Mirziyoyev's long-standing "friendship" with India. That's a step up from the previous Strategic Partnership.
"Prime Minister appreciated the progress made in the long-term arrangement for supply of Uranian from Uzbekistan to India and reaffirmed the importance of strengthening cooperation in critical minerals," India's foreign ministry said in a statement.
Earlier in the day, President Mirziyoyev awarded Modi the "Oliy Darajali Do'stlik" order.
"This is Uzbekistan’s highest honour for foreign leaders and has been awarded for PM’s contribution in strengthening the friendship between two countries," India's foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on X.

The student-led campaign put the government under intense political pressure and ended with the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in July.
Now, the CJP is taking aim at India's government schools , organizing volunteer visits to classrooms, documenting conditions and demanding accountability for problems.
Launched on August 15, Independence Day in India, the campaign asks parents, students and volunteers to inspect schools and record basic facilities including toilets, drinking water, electricity, classroom furniture and school buildings. The CJP has said the findings will be used to pressure authorities to make improvements.

The 18th BRICS Summit is scheduled to take place in Delhi on September 12-13. Hotel booking platforms currently show no availability of rooms at premium properties like Taj Mahal, Taj Palace, The Oberoi and Leela Palace.
Hotels like ITC Maurya, Shangri-La Eros did have rooms but at six-figure rates for a night.
The phenomenon is not unprecedented. In February 2026, when New Delhi hosted the India AI Impact Summit, hotel rates saw a similar sharp rise.

08/30/2026 August 30, 2026 Over 270 Indians still missing in Nepal floods Some 275 Indian nationals remain missing from this week's devastating flash floods on the Nepal-Tibet border, according to the latest figures published by India's Foreign Ministry.
About 49 of them went missing in Tibet, as per Chinese state media's update on Sunday, meaning the remaining 226 likely went missing in Nepal.
Indian authorities and local villagers have recovered several bodies downstream of the Himalayan rivers after the floods. As per local media reports, the deceased are still being identified.
