Every England win was marked by a singalong to Oasis' "Wonderwall" at the 2026 FIFA men's World Cup . After the Three Lions' stunning loss to Argentina in the semifinal, Oasis' "Don't Look Back in Anger" may be more appropriate.
England and Real Madrid star midfielder Jude Bellingham will look back on the loss in bewilderment for quite a while.
"I think we can take a lot from the experience, but it is so gutting," Bellingham said, per the BBC . "I wanted to be a part of an England squad that finally done it, finally got it over the line, and to be here, telling the fans, unfortunately, the same things that they've probably heard for years and years, it's really gutting. I wish I could say more. I wish I could give one more win, or two more wins, but at the moment, head's a bit fuzzy with disappointment. So, I'm sorry."
England held a 1-0 lead over Argentina after Anthony Gordon's goal in the 55th minute, and after manager Thomas Tuchel switched to five back, the Three Lions clung to that lead for dear life. But eventually, the Argentines did what they'd done all knockout stage: assemble a mad flurry at the end, snatch a comeback victory, and leave the opponent stupefied.
Lionel Messi laid a perfect ball for Enzo Fernandez to blast from outside the box to equalize in the 85th minute, and Messi's right-footed cross found Lautaro Martinez's head for the winner in the 92nd minute. Messi, 39, leads the Golden Boot race with eight goals and four assists in his sixth World Cup.
Now, Argentina will face Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday, July 19, to try to become the first repeat men's World Cup champions since Brazil in 1958 and 1962.
While Argentina broke England's collective heart, Bellingham has nothing to apologize for. He and captain Harry Kane scored six goals apiece and combined for 12 of England's 14 goals at this World Cup. This England squad was plenty good enough to bring it home. But sometimes, you run into a GOAT on a team seemingly touched by God. As such, England's tedious, tortuous wait will continue, as the Three Lions have not won the World Cup since 1966.
