In one of the biggest trades in NBA history, the Milwaukee Bucks sent Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat in exchange for Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, and a haul of draft picks. The deal became official on July 6, ending months of speculation as to where the two-time MVP will end up.
The pressure had been building for more than a year as the Bucks were unable to build a true contender around him and ultimately made the final call to completely reset everything. Rumors had circulated for a while that Miami was the frontrunner, but Boston also emerged as a finalist before the Heat edged them out.
With Giannis now in South Beach, his brother Thanasis offered a refreshingly honest take on his podcast, "Thanalysis Show," about when and how he learned of the trade, and his immediate reaction to it.
"The crazy part is I didn’t know. I didn’t know ... That’s his business, and that’s what he wants to do ... In terms of reaction, I’m still adjusting, bro. It’s hard. It’s exciting and hard at the same time, and whoever says it’s not, then you’re not human."

Safe to say this is a franchise-altering move for both teams.
For Miami, they've now got arguably the best defensive duo in the league with Giannis and Bam Adebayo, a three-time All-Star with five second-team All-Defensive honors and a first-team All-Defensive nod in 2024.
Milwaukee, meanwhile, gets ready to embrace a new era. They've still got Kevin Porter Jr., sharpshooter Ryan Rollins, veteran wing Kyle Kuzma, and defensive anchor Myles Turner, plus the wave of new players they just added. But after a 32-win season and having just lost the face of the franchise from the last decade, this team still has a long way to go.

Expectations for Miami in 2026-27 are high but also tempered. The Knicks just won an NBA title and will run it back with the same core, while the Celtics will have a fully healthy Jayson Tatum, and the Pacers will get back Tyrese Haliburton.
This is a Heat team assembled to win right now, but with Kawhi Leonard also back in Toronto, Jaylen Brown in Philly, and LeBron James potentially headed back to Cleveland, the East will be loaded next season.
