Is Sony about to announce a new PlayStation Portal game streaming handheld? The Wi-Fi Alliance recently certified two unannounced PlayStation products of some kind, and the certification documents indicate that they could be updates to the PlayStation Portal, which might mean we’re getting the OLED screen rumored earlier this year.
The two devices, which are classified as “Gaming Console/Peripherals,” have model numbers of CFI-Y2000 and CFI-Y2105, which sound like a clear step up from the CFI-Y1001 model number for the currently available Portal. The docs say that the new models run on Android 15, which further indicates that they might be Portals; the current model also runs Android . (The PS5 home console, on the other hand, runs a custom OS.)
While Sony is expected to eventually announce a PlayStation handheld that natively plays PS5 games on next-gen AMD graphics, its PlayStation Portal streams games instead, either from your home PlayStation or from Sony’s cloud. That can make for a far more affordable device, something Sony itself pointed out this June : “Cloud streaming also requires minimal memory, making it an increasingly attractive low-cost thin client device in the current market environment where memory prices are rising.”
The new gadgets don’t look like they’re getting dramatically improved Wi-Fi for streaming, though: they’re certified for 1x1 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, but not 6GHz and seemingly without more antennas.
There’s not much more to glean from the certification docs, unfortunately — I’ve embedded them at the end of this article, if you want to see them for yourself — and PlayStation didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment. But as reported by VideoCardz , hardware leaker KeplerL2 said earlier this year that Sony was working on “another version” of the Portal for this year that would be an “OLED version.”
The original Portal, which has an 8-inch LCD screen, launched in late 2023 .
