The New York Times reported that Witkoff and Kushner made it to the Ukrainian capital by train and later traveled via motorcade to meet Zelensky. Both CNN and the Times reported that their arrival followed discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
Witkoff and Kushner were set to travel to Russia and Ukraine this weekend, per previous reports, in an attempt to relaunch peace talks between the two countries. The war between Russia and Ukraine will reach the four-year mark next February if it does not conclude before then.
Zelensky said that he and his own negotiating team had met prior to discussions with Witkoff and Kushner, according to CNN.
“We are ready for talks. Ukraine has always been and will continue to be constructive,” Zelensky said on Telegram, per CNN.
Zelensky posted a video of himself hugging both Witkoff and Kushner on the social platform X Sunday morning . The Ukrainian leader said that the two sides “began talks,” in the caption.
Last Tuesday , Zelensky advised airlines against entering Russian airspace as his military responded to an “escalation” in missile and drone attacks.
The Ukrainian president said in an address that Russia had recently switched up its defense tactics, turning toward strikes from Ukrainian airspace. In the wake of a wave of attacks, Zelensky said that type of warfare “cannot and will not remain confined” to his country’s territory.
