In a "Monday Night Football" showdown featuring the Buffalo Bills against the Los Angeles Rams , Matthew Stafford achieved a rare feat that no other quarterback has ever accomplished in NFL history.
The reigning NFL Most Valuable Player had himself quite a game, throwing his 150th touchdown pass while playing for the Rams. That makes him the only player in NFL history to record 150 touchdown passes with two different teams, as Stafford previously played for the Detroit Lions from 2009 to 2020.
For Monday's game against the Bills, Stafford demonstrated his brilliance, completing 40 of 54 passes for 383 yards and three touchdowns. Two of his touchdowns came in a Rams high-scoring fourth quarter to Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, after Stafford previously found Adams in the game's second quarter.
Despite achieving that historic feat, it came with a stinging loss, as the Rams seemed on the verge of defeating the Bills and improving to 3-2, but overtime didn't work out as expected for the home team.
It was a thrilling clash at SoFi Stadium in what some may have considered a preview of the Super Bowl. After trailing, 13-7 at halftime, the Rams put up 27 points in the second half, including Kyren Williams' rushing touchdown to tie things up late in the fourth quarter, forcing overtime.
After the Bills' James Cook had his second fumble of the night, Stafford seemingly guided his team into an ideal position for a game-winning field goal. However, Buffalo blocked the Rams' attempt, allowing Josh Allen to show off his wizardry and move his team down the field for Tyler Bass's 45-yard field goal to win 37-34.
That dropped Stafford and the Rams to a disappointing 2-3 start to their season, as many considered this team the favorites to win next year's Super Bowl. However, they've had some injury woes to start the season, including Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett, whom they traded with the Cleveland Browns this offseason.
Garrett went on Injured Reserve (IR) in mid-September due to arthroscopic left knee surgery. His return is considered "week to week." According to ESPN , Rams head coach Sean McVay indicated they want Garrett to "return to performance" rather than just "return to play" for the team.
With Monday night's historic feat, Stafford has definitely put himself amongst the superstar quarterbacks. He's currently sixth all-time in touchdown passes and would need over 70 more touchdowns to pass the legendary Brett Favre for the No. 5 spot.
