The latest investment in the states by Planned Parenthood Votes — a super PAC affiliated with Planned Parenthood — will fund digital ad campaigns targeting Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.).
Collins is seeking a sixth term in the upper chamber against former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson (D), while Rogers is taking on former Wayne County health official Abdul El-Sayed (D) in the race to succeed outgoing Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.).
Planned Parenthood Votes’ $1 million investment beefs up its spending in the two Senate races, as the super PAC has already spent $600,000 and $800,000 on ads in Maine and Michigan, respectively.
Planned Parenthood Votes unveiled its $47 million “We Decide” ad campaign over the summer, intended to unseat lawmakers whom the super PAC claim voted to defund Planned Parenthood — which provides reproductive healthcare, including abortion procedures.
Collins and GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), though, sided with Democrats last year in striking a provision from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that proposed barring Planned Parenthood health centers from receiving Medicaid funding for services provided to low-income women.
Jackson, the Democrat opposing Collins in Maine, was also previously opposed to abortion before pivoting during his time in the state Senate.
“I’ve made mistakes early on in understanding” abortion, Jackson told The New York Times in July. “Regardless of this U.S. Senate race, I’m really, really proud of how I’ve turned that around and ... done the right thing. I mean, I was wrong.”
Jackson has also criticized Collins for voting to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2018.
Kavanaugh was part of the majority in the high court’s 2022 ruling in Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned Roe vs. Wade and struck down the federal right to an abortion.
Sarah Standiford, the executive director of Planned Parenthood Votes, said in a Tuesday release that Collins and Rogers “can’t be trusted to protect our rights or our healthcare.”
Sandiford added, “It’s our job to make sure every voter knows that before they cast their ballot. Our message is resonating online and at the doors, and moving voters, so we’re putting more resources behind it in two races where we know Planned Parenthood Votes can make a big difference.”
