The Green Bay Packers received concerning injury news earlier this month, when star running back, Josh Jacobs, suffered a groin injury at practice.
Due to his injury, Jacobs was unable to practice for most of the month and didn't participate in his team's first preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
On Tuesday, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur delivered an optimistic update on Jacobs. According to reporter Rob Demovsky , Jacobs would participate in the team's practice.
A week ago, Jacobs practiced on a side field at the team's training camp, but was still withheld from their first preseason game, a 28-9 loss at Pittsburgh.
Last season, Jacobs racked up 929 and 13 touchdowns on 234 carries in his 15 games. In the season before that, which was his first with Green Bay, he tallied over 1,329 yards and 15 touchdowns and was named to the Pro Bowl.
The Packers' depth chart currently has newer running back MarShawn Lloyd behind Jacobs, followed by Chris Brooks and Pierre Strong Jr., with two of them seeing time on the field in their preseason loss.
Strong finished with just three carries for nine yards, while Brooks had four carries for 13 yards. Neither player scored, as all of Green Bay's points were from field goals.
Getting Jacobs back is a major part of Green Bay succeeding this season, especially in an already competitive NFC North. Things became more competitive in the offseason, with the Vikings signing quarterback Kyler Murray to address the team's recent struggles at the position.
Last season saw the Chicago Bears win the division, and many believe that if the Packers hadn't been hit with injuries, specifically to defensive star Micah Parsons, they would've been the NFC North winners. While Green Bay still reached the playoffs, they had a disappointing early exit, courtesy of those Bears in the NFC Wild Card Round.
Parsons is expected back by Week 6, but an earlier return from Jacobs would be a welcome sign for the team. Green Bay has its regular-season opener on the road on Sunday, Sept. 13, when they visit the Vikings.
