Giannis Antetokounmpo took the podium for his introductory press conference with the Miami Heat on Thursday, turning the page on the next chapter of his NBA career.
Antetokounmpo spent the last 13 seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, playing under five different full-time head coaches. Now, he joins a franchise with the NBA's longest-tenured active head coach: Erik Spoelstra.
Antetokounmpo wants to be "coached hard" in order to reach his full potential in Miami.
βI just want to be coached hard. Iβd rather you tell me the ugly truth than a beautiful lie. The moment I'm coached hard, everybody else is going to follow. I don't want to be sugar coated," Antetokounmpo said. "I have a lot of people like that in my life that try to approach me and try to make me feel good. I donβt need that."
"I need the truth. I need the right feedback so I can be able to apply that to life and the game of basketball," he added. "Iβm excited to be coached by him. ... Iβm excited to be here and I know he's going to get the best out of me.β
Antetokounmpo now joins three-time All-Star big man Bam Adebayo to form a dominant front-court duo. The Heat are also actively pursuing all-time great free agent LeBron James, as confirmed by team president Pat Riley on Thursday.
