Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) on Monday night while stumping for Republicans in Ohio ahead of the midterms.
Federal agents searched the home of Omar, a Somali-born American citizen, on Monday as part of a federal criminal investigation into Omar.
“Just look at what’s happening in the once great state of Minnesota. What a mess they have done,” Trump said in Youngstown. “And Ilhan, somebody was asking. I don’t know what they’re doing with it, but I can tell you this: she’s a disaster.”
He said Omar comes from “one of the worst countries anywhere on the planet.”
The crowd started chanting “deport” as he talked about Somalis in the U.S.
He brought up the massive pandemic-era fraud scheme that took place in Minnesota and involved some of the state’s Somali community. Hundreds of millions of dollars were stolen from a federally funded nutrition program.
“They came over here. They had nothing. They came from a government that doesn’t exist,” the president said. “They come from a part of the world that only knows how to kill each other.”
He accused Democrats in Minnesota of cheating in the elections, saying he thought he won the state in 2024 before “a rather large drop of votes” showed up. Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris won Minnesota in 2024.
“They cheat like hell. Aside from everything else, they cheat on the elections,” he said.
Earlier Monday Trump called Omar “ totally crooked ” after being asked about the federal agents searching her home.
“Well, I understand they’re looking at her very carefully,” he told reporters before departing the White House for Ohio. “I’ve always found her to be totally crooked personally, but that has nothing to do with me.”
“I think she’s a terrible person, but that’s really up to the DOJ,” he continued. “I have nothing to do with it.”
Last week, Trump said Minnesotans should “fight back” against the Somali immigrants in their state.
“The once Great State of Minnesota is being taken over by Somali Immigrants. There is Violence, Murder, and Mayhem all over the State,” Trump wrote on Truth Social . “The people of Minnesota must fight back.”
Minnesota has the largest population of Somalis in the U.S. and 1.07 percent, according to World Population Review . Most arrived as refugees, like Omar and her family, after a civil war in the country in the 90s.
