Millions of Americans could face deteriorating air quality as massive wildfires continue to rage across Canada, with officials warning that smoke from some of the largest blazes is capable of traveling hundreds of miles across the border and into the United States.
The latest emergency has centered on British Columbia, where a fast-moving wildfire near Summerland and Peachland triggered one of the province's largest evacuation events of the year.
Authorities declared a provincial state of emergency on August 8 after more than 20,000 people were forced from their homes as the Bald Range wildfire rapidly expanded amid hot, dry, and windy conditions.
A wildfire map published by the BC Wildfire Service shows active fires burning across large parts of the province, with concentrations in British Columbia's southern interior and other regions under heightened fire danger.

The NWS air quality advisories warn that smoke is affecting parts of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Colorado, with some areas experiencing unhealthy or very unhealthy levels of fine particulate pollution. Cities specifically identified in alerts include Denver, Fort Collins and Greeley in Colorado; Spokane, Yakima, Kennewick and Walla Walla in Washington; Boise, Coeur d'Alene and Lewiston in Idaho; Missoula and Great Falls in Montana; and Jackson and Casper in Wyoming.
Health officials warn that wildfire smoke contains fine particulate matter that can aggravate asthma, heart disease and other respiratory conditions. Children, older adults, pregnant people and those with existing lung or cardiovascular illnesses are considered particularly vulnerable.
The Bald Range wildfire exploded in size after being discovered on August 7, prompting overnight evacuation orders for Summerland, Peachland and nearby communities west of Okanagan Lake.
British Columbia Premier David Eby said homes and other structures had been lost and that some residents required rescue after conditions changed rapidly. He described accounts from fire officials comparing the blaze to "a bomb going off," with towering flames generating their own weather patterns.
According to the BC Wildfire Service and provincial officials, roughly 1,500 firefighters have been deployed across British Columbia, with dozens of evacuation orders in place, as crews battle more than 100 active fires burning throughout the province.
The current emergency is part of a broader wildfire season that has affected multiple provinces, including British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec. Persistent heat, dry vegetation and periods of strong wind have contributed to elevated fire danger throughout the country.
The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre reports that approximately 3.9 million hectares of land have burned across Canada so far this year. Officials warn that challenging fire conditions could continue in parts of British Columbia as summer weather persists.
For Americans, the greatest immediate risk may not be flames but smoke.
Forecasters continue to monitor wildfire activity and wind patterns that could carry hazardous air pollution south into the United States, potentially impacting millions of people far from the fires themselves.
