MLB Insider Questions Red Sox' Trade Deadline Approach After Surge

The Boston Red Sox have gone from one of the worst teams in baseball (37-48 on July 1) to one of the best teams in baseball (60-51 on Aug. 3).
It's easy to look at that turnaround and assume that they'll be one of the biggest buyers at the trade deadline, but you can also make the argument that they shouldn't throw a wrench in what is currently happening. Boston has secured eight straight series victories, capping off their ludicrous 28-5 stretch with a sweep over the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.
ESPN's Jeff Passan is among those trying to figure out which path is the right one to take, and sort of played the middle in an appearance on SportsCenter on Monday.
“Do the Red Sox need to do anything at this point? They don’t need to," Passan said. "I think they want to, though. Boston wants to capitalize on this run that they’re on right now…”
Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz , Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman , Los Angeles Angels shortstop Zach Neto , and Miami Marlins shortstop Otto Lopez are among the most high profile names to be connected to Boston ahead of the 6 p.m. ET trade deadline on Monday.
It's pretty well known at this point that the organization is extremely high on adding long-term options at shortstop and catcher, though they also need pitching help in both the starting rotation and bullpen.
ESPN's Buster Olney reports that it is a "buyers' market" with regards to the latter, so perhaps their perceived aggressiveness and the willingness of others could help them address all needs.
It's only a matter of time until something happens...
