The New England Patriots have a lot of competition for roster spots, but one rookie cornerback made sure to put himself on the radar in his NFL preseason debut.
Kenneth Harris, who was signed by the New England Patriots as a rookie free agent, rocked it in his first preseason appearance against the Indianapolis Colts. He's showing that he can hold his own in coverage. Harris was targeted three times across 16 coverage snaps and gave up only one reception for six yards.
That kind of efficiency is exactly what a young defensive back wants to show when he gets his first chance against NFL competition. Harris didn't simply stay out of trouble, either. He also recorded a pass breakup, adding another positive play to a solid debut.
His performance resulted in an 86.1 overall PFF grade, while his 87.9 coverage grade stood out even more. Harris also allowed a passer rating of just 42.4 on throws directed into his coverage.
For a rookie trying to carve out a role, those numbers make for a strong opening statement. Harris didn't have a huge workload, but he made the most of the snaps he received and showed the kind of coverage ability that could give New England another option in its secondary.
The Patriots have a number of players competing for time at cornerback, making every preseason rep important. Harris' debut gives him something to build on as he continues working toward a larger role.
His performance also caught the attention of PFF's Gordon McGuinness , who included Harris among his players to watch after the opening week of the preseason. That recognition puts Harris in a group of rookies who have already made an impression early in their NFL careers.
There is still a lot of work ahead for the young cornerback, and one preseason game won't determine his place on the roster. Still, Harris couldn't have asked for a much better introduction to NFL action.
