Patrick Mahomes Could Miss All Chiefs' Preseason Games

The Kansas City Chiefs ' preseason opener is just a week away, and there is a strong chance star quarterback Patrick Mahomes won't be suiting up against the Los Angeles Rams on Aug. 15.
Mahomes underwent surgery in December to repair a torn ACL and LCL he suffered in a Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers last season. He is fully cleared to participate in training camp, but head coach Andy Reid said he may not play Mahomes in any of the Chiefs' three preseason games.
"I mean, there's a pretty good chance where I don't play him," Reid said, per ESPN. "[The] percentages are leading that way. I don't know if I'll play him in the second or third game. I don't know that. The percentages probably lean against not doing that."
Two weeks ago, Mahomes told reporters he wants to play in the preseason games. However, he understands being fully healthy for the regular season is more important for the Chiefs.
"I'm a competitor, so [on] game day, I'm going to want to be out there," Mahomes said, per ESPN. "But I understand the process of getting myself ready to play in the regular season is more important. We'll see. The coaches and doctors will make that decision for me, but I'll prepare myself like I'm going to play."
Reid told reporters backup quarterback Justin Fields and rookie quarterback Garrett Nussmeier will get opportunities to play in Mahomes place during the preseason.
"We've got new people behind [Mahomes] that need some work," Reid said. "The more reps they get, the better."
After opening the preseason against the Rams next week, the Chiefs have two more preseason games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks before starting the regular season against the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium on Sept. 14.
