The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will live at a private residence outside of London while keeping their home in Montecito, Calif., and vacation property in Portugal, according to reports.
Their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, have enrolled in British schools and will begin classes in September.
The move is a major reversal for the couple since “Megxit,” when they left Britain in 2020 after stepping back from their official royal duties amid a bitter dispute with the royal family and intense scrutiny and litigation involving the British press.
Harry and Meghan will not be returning to their royal duties once they return to England. They will remain nonworking members of the royal family and will not live at a royal residence, preserving an arrangement reached with the late Queen Elizabeth II after their initial departure.
King Charles III reportedly learned of the couple’s plans to return Sunday and welcomed the prospect of having his son and grandchildren closer. Charles had last seen Harry and Meghan’s children this summer for the first time in four years during a visit to England at his Highgrove estate.
Harry has increasingly signaled that he wants to repair his relationship with his family, particularly his father, who is being treated for an undisclosed form of cancer.
“I would love reconciliation with my family. There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore,” Harry said in an interview with the BBC last year.
Harry and Meghan’s relationship with the royal family deteriorated after the couple publicly aired their issues with several senior royals, including his older brother, Prince William and his wife, Princess Catherine, who also battled cancer.
The issues generated further headlines during an explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, when Meghan accused an unnamed member of the royal family of inquiring about the skin color of their unborn child and accusing Catherine of making her cry. Harry also further criticized Charles’s wife, Queen Camilla, over her affair with his father while he was married to Harry’s mother, the late Princess Diana.
Harry and his family lost his taxpayer-funded police protection after stepping back from royal duties and repeatedly challenged that decision in court. He argued that the lack of security made it impossible to bring Meghan and their children to Britain safely.
Harry and Meghan, who married in 2018, have built careers outside the monarchy since moving to the U.S., including through media and business ventures. Meghan was an actress before her marriage to Harry, notably starring in the popular show “Suits.”
