“Europe has a lot of diesel, and they’re going to be making a major world contribution, and so are we, and we’re not going to be doing the export ban,” Trump told reporters as he prepared to depart the White House for Alabama.
“We were never going to do it,” he added of a diesel export ban.
Last week, Trump appeared to back the idea of banning exports of diesel as prices of the fuel reached new heights, saying, “I’ve called for it within my people.”
However, in the days that followed, members of his administration, including Energy Secretary Chris Wright, indicated that the administration did not plan to ban diesel exports.
Outside analysts have said that an export ban could actually raise prices of some fuels like gasoline because refiners that make these fuels together could be incentivized to cut overall production.
Trump’s latest comments come after the G7, which includes the U.S., U.K., Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan, said they would release 100 million barrels of fuel over the course of the next four months, including “a “frontloaded substantial diesel release within the first 20 days.”
Diesel, which is particularly important for industries like farming and trucking, was averaging $6.37 per gallon in the U.S. on Friday, according to AAA .
