Cubs Make Splash Addition, Trade for Two-Time All-Star

The Chicago Cubs are acquiring right-handed pitcher Kevin Gausman in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Mitch Bannon.
Gausman, 35, becomes perhaps the biggest name traded before the trade deadline thus far, as the two-time All-Star suffers a familiar fate after previously being traded from the Baltimore Orioles to the Atlanta Braves in 2018 and from the Atlanta Braves to the Cincinnati Reds in 2019.
The Cubs have sought a playoff-caliber starting pitcher, and they've landed someone who has 14 postseason appearances with 56 strikeouts, 22 walks, and a 3.83 ERA between stints with Baltimore, Atlanta, Toronto, and the San Francisco Giants -- immediately making him the club's most experienced playoff starter.
The Blue Jays, on the other hand, have started selling pieces just one year after winning the American League. Gausman finishes with a 3.62 ERA during his time in Toronto, though he experienced a sharp decline this season in terms of his overall effectiveness.
Bannon reported that the return will consist of outfielder Brett Bateman and infielder Ty Southisene.
Southisene (No. 13) and Bateman (No. 21) are relatively middling prospects for Chicago, though it hasn't taken very much to obtain pitching at this trade deadline.
