Trump envoys hail ‘encouraging’ talks in Kyiv to end Russia-Ukraine war

The president’s special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner said they had “encouraging” talks with Ukrainian officials in Kyiv on Sunday to help end the Russia-Ukraine war .
Speaking with reporters, Witkoff described the latest round of peace talks as “substantive” and “important.” Witkoff and Kushner spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in their first visit to Kyiv amid the war.
Zelensky thanked the U.S. diplomats for making the trip.
“We had a good conversation – several rounds already – and we will continue talking today,” he posted on X . “The main thing is to achieve peace for Ukraine – a dignified, reliable, and lasting peace. We are directing all our efforts toward this.”
The Ukrainian and U.S. officials also deliberated with representatives from the United Kingdom , France , and Germany .
Before traveling to Kyiv, the pair held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday. The two special envoys appointed by President Donald Trump have visited Moscow multiple times, trying to facilitate peace.

The talks with Putin resulted in no major breakthrough over the weekend, though the Kremlin said they were constructive and useful.
The Trump administration is intent on ending the Russia-Ukraine war, as it has been over 4 and a half years since Russian forces invaded Ukrainian territory. Putin ordered a three-day pause in fighting as he met with Trump’s envoys. Witkoff is the special envoy to the Middle East, and Kushner is the special envoy for peace and the president’s son-in-law.
