08/21/2026 August 21, 2026 Two ships with 22 Indian sailors hijacked by pirates Piracy off the coast of Somalia peaked in 2011 before being curbed by international naval deployments and new security measures for commercial shipping. But attacks have surged again since April [FILE: August 8, 2025] Image: Solomon Muchie/DW Two commercial vessels carrying 22 Indian nationals were hijacked in separate incidents off Yemen and Somalia, reports said.
The incidents highlight renewed piracy concerns in waters around the Horn of Africa.
The Eritrea-flagged oil products tanker MT Sibu 1, a US-sanctioned vessel, was seized in the Gulf of Aden, about 30 nautical miles off Yemen, maritime security agencies said.
"The tanker has reportedly been boarded by six armed persons, who are now in control of the vessel and redirecting it towards Somalia ," said the EU's Maritime Security Centre Indian Ocean (MSCIO).
The vessel was carrying 16 Indians among its 20-member crew.
In a separate incident, pirates seized the Cameroon-flagged cargo vessel M/V LUTUF off Somalia's Puntland coast on Monday.
The vessel had 10 crew members, including six Indians, and was reportedly taken towards the Nugaal coast, according to a Somali official cited by the Associated Press.
Its current status and that of its crew and cargo remained unclear.
08/21/2026 August 21, 2026 Rahul Gandhi's protest forces police to lodge complaint of pellet injury Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday staged a sit-in outside a police station in New Delhi on Friday after authorities allegedly refused to register the complaint of a student protester's pellet injuries suffered during last month's Cockroach protest.
Gandhi had accompanied Sahil Lochab to the Parliament Street police station in New Delhi to register a report of his complaint.
His sister and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra later joined him in the sit-in protest.
According to the Congress party, Lochab had previously approached police on August 14 and August 17 but did not receive an acknowledgement or details of the investigating officer.
Gandhi, while talking to media, said medical reports showed that more than 200 pellets were lodged in Lochab's body, including three in his eye, resulting in loss of vision. He also said some pellets were lodged near Lochab's heart and could not be removed.
Lochab's lawyer said police had only stamped and acknowledged the complaint after Gandhi's intervention, and claimed medical reports confirmed that pellet guns had been used.
Gandhi alleged that Delhi Police had denied firing pellet guns during the protest and demanded an investigation into how Lochab sustained the injuries.
"Delhi Police has said that they did not fire the pellets," Gandhi said. "So, there is only one question: If you did not fire them, then someone must have fired these pellets."
"Neither has Home Minister Amit Shah offered any explanation to the students for this cruelty, nor has the Prime Minister apologized to them. Now, when Sahil wants to file an FIR for justice, even that is not being allowed," Gandhi posted on X.
08/21/2026 August 21, 2026 Bangladesh PM Tarique Rahman likely to visit India, says report Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to visit India from August 23 to 25 Image: Munir Uz Zaman/AFP Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to visit India from August 23 to 25, The Indian Express newspaper reported on Friday.
This will be his first trip to the country since taking office in February.
However, the PM's Press Secretary Saleh Shibly said that there has been no decision yet on Rahman's visit to India.
"The Prime Minister is not going to visit India until a response is received to Bangladesh's requests to the Indian authorities for the return of Sheikh Hasina and other absconding offenders, as well as the extradition to Bangladesh of those accused in the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi," the press secretary said.
Hadi, a former student leader of the 2024 protests, died after being shot by masked gunmen in 2025.
The ties between the neighbors were strained by the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024, whose extradition Dhaka has sought from New Delhi .
Hasina fled to India in 2024 after student-led protests ended her tenure as prime minister. In 2025, a Bangladeshi court convicted her in absentia of crimes against humanity for her role in the violent crackdown on protesters.
The governments across the border have been in talks for long for Rahman's possible visit to India, as Bangladesh seeks good relations with its neighbor.
