Patrick Mahomes Provides Promising Injury Update

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a devastating knee injury last season, tearing both his ACL and MCL. It's a very difficult injury to come back from, but Mahomes recently provided a very promising update on his recovery.
"It feels great," Mahomes said via Nate Taylor of ESPN . "When you're tired sometimes, you don't even think about [the knee]. I'm trying to protect it, but at the same time trying to push it and get myself ready to go for the season."
The 2025 season was unlike any that fans have become accustomed to watching Mahomes. He threw for a career-low 3,587 yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions as the Chiefs finished in third place in the AFC West with a 6-11 record.
However, he also rushed for a career-high 422 yards and five touchdowns as the Chiefs had a significant lack of production from their running backs. Unfortunately, that's exactly what led to his season-ending knee injury.
The Chiefs have since added Super Bowl MVP running back Kenneth Walker in free agency to help take the pressure off Mahomes, but he admits his competitiveness overtakes him sometimes.
"I try to be smart, but there's just sometimes where, in camp, you're trying to compete and practices are long," Mahomes continued. "I mean, you want to win the rep. There's times where I do forget about it and just play football."
It's fine for Mahomes to experiment with his scrambling ability in the safety of going up against his own defense, but once live action comes against opposing teams, he's going to have to be much smarter.
That's something he acknowledged he's going to have to be, especially when it matters most.
"I'm trying to hold myself back because I'm just a competitor," Mahomes said. "I'm not going to lose who I am, but I'm going to try to keep myself smart and keep myself in position to be out there for my teammates."
The No. 10 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Mahomes has thrown for 35,939 yards, 267 touchdowns and 85 interceptions while leading the Chiefs to three Super Bowl titles in his professional career.
