Eric Swalwell’s (D-Calif.) home on Sunday, a day after confiscating his electronic devices as part of an investigation regarding his ties to a potential Chinese spy.
On Monday, news broke of Swalwell’s “physical relations” with Christine Fang, a suspected Chinese spy, as outlined in newly declassified documents released by the White House Government Transparency Task Force.
Swalwell said he met Fang in 2015 and had “physical relations” with her on a “handful of occasions, but never dated her or had a romantic relationship.”
Federal investigators determined she ran a political intelligence gathering operation directed by China’s primary civilian spy agency between 2011 and 2015.
An independent journalistic probe revealed that her objective was to infiltrate U.S. political circles to gather unclassified but sensitive political intelligence, manipulate campaign financing, and cultivate relationships with up-and-coming politicians who had national potential, as reported by Axios .
FBI memos show that Fang facilitated an illicit scheme to route campaign donations through straw donors.
In at least two cases, she used American conduits to obscure the fact that the political contributions were secretly being funded by the Chinese government.
Federal investigators also uncovered evidence that Fang placed Chinese nationals and foreign interns inside Swalwell’s congressional office in exchange for campaign fundraising support.
The ongoing investigation into Swalwell by the FBI, Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department follows several women’s claims that the ex-lawmaker sexually assaulted them.
The allegations ultimately led him to suspend his campaign for California’s governorship and resign from his seat in the House in April, although Swalwell denies wrongdoing.
Swalwell was accused of assaulting a Hill staffer who was his junior by 17 years twice in the midst of his current marriage, as initially reported by the San Francisco Chronicle .
